Build Quality and Design

The Vapefly Optima is a compact pod mod, standing at 115mm by 30.7mm by 22.4mm. It is pretty portable that can be easily slipped into the pocket. On the top of the device, there is a slot for install the pod that held by strong magnets. On the bac side is a battery door, which comes with a removable magnetic battery cover stamped with “Optima”. This is a pro as it is easy to take out and exchange the battery. The body is made of durable zinc alloy that feels solid in the hands. It is available in 5 colours that you can choose from blue, silver, red, gunmetal and black. Each colour option has different design panels on the sides.

The branding logo “Vapefly” sits around the front of the device. Below is the oblong fire button, which is extremely nice to touch and clicky. The Optima also has an 0.91inch black and white screen, which is bright and easy to read. It clearly lists all the vaping info like mode, watts, resistance, voltage, puff time/ puff count and a battery bar. The Vapefly Optima features a rocker style adjustment button and a fast type-c charging at a rate of 5V/1.2A.

The Vapefly Optima supports several working modes, including USER, HARD, DIY, NORM and SOFT. With the NORM mode, the device can automatically set the wattage output to the recommended range dependant on the coil installed. Under the SOFT and HARD mode, it uses curves to ramp up more aggressively or slowly. The USER mode allows you to set your own curve and the DIY allows you to adjust the wattage up to 80W. There is no temp control on this device, but it still works well to be a full-featured vape. It is very easy to navigate, using the adjustment button to reset the counter and change modes, pressing the fire button three times to highlight the mode.

Tank and coils

The kit comes with two 3.5ml pods, among which one is pre-installed and the other compatible with rebuildable mesh coil or the spare coil. The pod is slightly tinted but enough to check the juice level. It features a side-fill design and comes with a silicone plug, which reveals a nice fill port when lifted. The pod boasts U-shaped airflow so that the air can come in from two little slots and down under the coil to help avoid any leaking.

There are two coils included in the kit, a 0.6ohm DL mesh coil rated for 20 – 28w and a 0.3ohm DL mesh coil rated for 30 – 40W. The 0.6ohm coil works well to deliver a tighter draw but not quite MTL, providing a good vapour and flavour. I tested these coil with the 70/30 freebase e-juice. Personally, I prefer the flavour and performance of the 0.3ohm coil. You can get a maximum output of 40w and enjoy a nice restricted to lung vape. If you are an MTL user, it is recommended to use the 0.6ohm coil with 25w. As for the coil longevity, the 0.3ohm coil can last around six days and about two to three refills a day.

Pros and Cons

  • No leaking
  • Type-C charging
  • U shaped airflow
  • Compact design
  • Two coils included
  • Available RDTA

I’m quite impressed with the performance of the Vapefly Optima pod mod. I love its compact design and versatile functions. It is suitable for an MTL or restricted to lung users thanks to the decent draw from both coils. If you are in the market for a pod mod with DIY and economic features, this is the one worth buying.
