What is E-liquid?
E-liquid (also known as vape juice or e-juice) is the flavoured mixture that is added to the vape tank of e-cigarettes or vape pens. When heated, the liquid creates the vapour in your e-cigarette which gives its flavour and nicotine. Vaping offers a smoking-like experience, without any combustion products actually being burned that make smoking deadly. Vape liquid comes in endless flavour options. There are some of the most popular flavour categories like fruits, menthol/mint, dessert, tobacco, drink, and more. There will always be new ejuice to try and new flavour blends to experience!
What are the Ingredients in E-liquid?
The e-cig liquid mixture is made up of a few different ingredients: water, Propylene Glycol (PG), Vegetable Glycerin (VG), food-grade flavouring, and if you choose it - nicotine. Each of these ingredients is lab-made that the FDA generally views as safe in food, drugs, and cosmetics. All of the ingredients used in e-liquids will be listed on the ejuice packaging. Let's take a look at these juice ingredients in turn.
What is Propylene Glycol (PG)? Is Propylene Glycol (PG) Safe?
Propylene Glycol is a clear, tasteless, and odourless additive with low viscosity. It is an ingredient not just in vape juice but also used to make artificial smoke or fog for performances and can be found in a variety of different day-to-day items, including food products and medicine.
There is a constant worry of new vapers is the misconception that e-liquid contains antifreeze. Propylene glycol is sometimes used as an ingredient for antifreeze, and it is usually confused with another ingredient found in antifreeze - ethylene glycol. Propylene glycol is safe, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly. It is also approved for human inhalation by Environmental Protection.
PG is a thin liquid and so produces less vapour, the opposite of VG ejuice which is a thicker liquid. PG is the best carrier for flavourings and nicotine in e-liquids. PG gives more throat hit that is similar to smoking a regular cigarette, therefore, are most popular with new vapers. Higher PG e liquid is usually used in low powered, mouth to lung vape pens, starter e-cigarette kits, and refillable pod kits. It can carry a higher nicotine content.
What is Vegetable Glycerol (VG)?
Vegetable Glycerin (VG) is an all-natural liquid that is extracted from plant oil. VG tastes a little sweet and is used in baked goods, sweeteners, and as a filler in foods. Like PG, VG is a clear and colourless, and odourless liquid. Vegetable Glycerin is much thicker in consistency, which helps to produce lots of vapour. High VG vape juice can produce impressive clouds. To produce bigger vape clouds, high VG eliquids require more power so you should consider high powered, low resistance advanced vape kits that use box mods and compatible sub ohm tanks. The vapour also carries the nicotine, so vape enthusiasts who prefer high VG liquids generally opt for lower nicotine strength.
What are the Different Types of E-liquid?
Eliquids come in different ratios of PG & VG. Differing ratios of these two ingredients will alter the throat hit, the strength of flavour, and the amount of vapour. There is a wide range of e-liquid types, so vapers can choose the best vape juice for their preferred vaping experience and nicotine requirements.
High PG E-Liquid (50VG/50PG or 60VG/40PG)
High PG e-liquids are popular among smokers who want to switch to vaping or regular vapers who want a more intense throat hit from their juice. High PG liquid offers higher levels of nicotine, and is available in strengths of up to 20mg. The High PG liquids closely replicate the sensation of a traditional cigarette and are vaped at lower powered MTL pod kits with plus ohm MTL coils (1 ohm or more). Typically, these High PG liquids start around 50% PG or 70% PG.
50PG/50VG eliquids hit that sweet spot between great flavour and impressive cloud production. They can be used in the majority of vape kits and vape tanks. 50-50 e-liquids are highly compatible with vape starter kits and pod kits, giving a decent throat hit with excellent flavour and satisfying clouds.
70PG/30VG liquids are designed to simulate the feel of smoking. They allow for higher levels of nicotine and delivers a more intense throat hit. This type of liquid is commonly used by those wanting to quit smoking.
High VG E-Liquid (70VG/30PG or 80VG/20PG or Max VG)
High VG e-liquids (also called sub-ohm liquids ) are designed to be used with sub-ohm tanks and higher powered vape kits. High VG content can provide you with denser clouds of vapour and a more intense taste sensation. So they are popular among cloud chasers and sub ohm vapers. High VG liquids are vaped at a higher temperature. They require more power to produce the large vape clouds so you should consider more powerful hardware to heat the VG effectively- sub-ohm pod mod kits, box mods, squonk mods, and for use in RTAs RDAs and RDTAs. The vapour also carries nicotine, so the High VG liquids are generally available in a range of lower nicotine strengths, more commonly 0mg, 3mg & 6mg strengths.
Nicotine Salt E-Liquids
Nicotine Salt e-liquids are the new way to vape, specifically developed for those who are looking for a better nicotine hit to satisfy their nicotine carving. Nic salt is a type of naturally forming nicotine found in leaf tobacco. Nic salt liquids are easier to inhale into the bloodstream so they are the most efficient way to deliver nicotine to your body. E-Liquids with a salt nicotine formulation can reduce the harshness of throat hits so vapers can take in more nicotine for each vape. Nic salt vape juice is an ideal type of nicotine replacement to help curb your nicotine addiction.
The salt nic eliquids are generally vaped at a lower temperature, so they are best for MTL starter kits and refillable pod devices. The salts offer a much softer throat hit compared with the regular freebase e-liquids, so they usually come in a higher nicotine concentration up to 20mg in the UK.
What are Shortfill E-Liquids?
Shortfill e-liquids are nicotine-free e-liquids and come in larger bottles, including 50ml and 100ml bottles that are only 80% filled with liquid, hence short fill. Shortfills were first introduced to the market in 2017 following the implementation of the TPD regulations. The TPD restricts any nicotine-containing e cig liquid that can only be sold in size of 10ml. Shortfill bottles are nicotine-free with space for a booster of liquid nicotine to reach your desired nicotine strength. The nicotine shots are 10ml bottles of unflavoured e-liquid which contain a high concentration of nicotine. They are generally used to mix with Shortfills or regular e-liquids to increase the nicotine concentration.
Shortfills offers a simple solution that saved vapers time and wasted packaging. They are easy to mix and cost-efficient. If you are heavy vapers looking to stock up on bucket loads of vape juice for the cheapest price possible, shortfill e-liquids are a great option to consider.
Which Nicotine Strength Should I Go For?
The nicotine strength listed in a bottle means the number of milligrams of nicotine per millilitre. Under the TPD legislation, the nicotine strength of e-liquid should not exceed 20mg/ml. You can learn more about TPD regulations here.
When it comes to choosing nicotine strength, it is based on what kind of e-cig devices you use and your smoking habits. The strength you use is personal to you. So let’s break it down into what kind of smoker you used to be:
Non-smoker: 0 mg nicotine strength
A Light smoker (up to 10 cigarettes a day): 3 mg nicotine strength
A heavy smoker (above 15 cigarettes a day): try 11mg, 16mg, 18mg, and 20mg to see what satisfies your nicotine cravings. Once you have found the right one you can gradually reduce it over time.

How to Store Vape Juice?

Some vapers choose to keep their e-liquids in a refrigerator or freezer to prevent prevents air and light. Stored correctly, most vape juice is useable for 2 years. Once you have opened bottles of vape juice, you need to get on and use them, because they will not last long.
